What started as a vision by board member Chris Howard became an unforgettable day of hockey action, community spirit, and competition all inspired by the legacy of Dominik Hasek, one of the greatest goaltenders the game has ever seen. Known for his brilliance in shootouts, Hasek’s legacy made a shootout-style tournament the perfect tribute.
With the combined efforts of Chris Howard, Program Director Joe Lo Tempio, the Hasek’s Heroes board, and the dedicated hasek's heroes staff/volunteers, the Dominator’s Breakaway Challenge was brought to life — and the result was nothing short of electric.
From the first puck drop to the final shot, the ice at Bud Bakewell Rink was filled with energy, incredible goals, and massive saves. A unique highlight of the tournament was the live stat system, displayed on TVs near each bench, allowing players and fans to follow rankings in real time throughout each round.
Families, friends, and fans packed the stands and lobby, with raffle prizes, concessions, and tournament merch adding to the fun. The support from volunteers, staff, board members, and parents made the event truly special — from running the snack table and raffle baskets to managing benches and cheering every player on.

Quotes from two of our champions, Hayden Dawson & Nick Crapsi, reflected on their experience:
“Stepping into the net for the shootout against players of all levels was both humbling and exciting. Everyone brought something different, but the shared love for the game made it just as unforgettable as the banner I get to proudly hang on my wall for winning.” -Dawson
“The tournament was great, had a lot of good goalies & shooters and there were so many highlight level moments, i'm ready to defend my title next year” -- Crapsi
Proceeds from the event support the mission of Hasek’s Heroes — providing free access to hockey, equipment, and life-changing opportunities for youth in the Buffalo community. This tournament not only showcased talent but helped raise funds to continue that mission.
Program Director Joe Lo Tempio kept the energy high throughout the day, working the microphone and calling the live action for each player:
“It was such a fun day! action-packed from start to finish. I’m so thankful to have such a supportive community here at Hasek’s Heroes. Our staff, parents, and volunteers really helped bring this event to life and make it a success.”
