Before every home game, something powerful happens at center ice. As the crowd quiets and players take their positions, 2 to 4 young skaters step forward, take the microphone, and lead the crowd in singing the national anthem.
This pre-game tradition has become a cherished part of the Hasek’s Heroes experience — and one that celebrates far more than just the start of a game.
The anthem performances have created a fun, meaningful moment where players proudly showcase their confidence, personality, and sense of community. Whether it’s their first time singing in public or they’re returning to the mic, each performance fills the rink with pride and positive energy.
“We’re happy to give them opportunities to grow and be themselves,” said Program Director Joe Lo Tempio. “It’s a great reminder that hockey is about more than just what happens on the ice.”
The tradition started with Jayden Doyle, one of the players who had recently starred in a school play. When Coach Joe heard about his talent, he invited Jayden to sing the anthem before the next game and the rest, as they say, is history.
What followed was a ripple effect. Players began asking if they could sing, and now it’s become a regular, player-led tradition. Each week, a small group takes the mic together, singing loud and proud and setting the tone for the game ahead.
Some of the talented singers who have stepped up include:
Tinka Cannan, Abigail Edmunds, Nathan Howell, Amelia Christman, Smith Cannan, Hamdan Elmouss, Gareth Jones, and Jayden Doyle, among others.
“It’s one of my favorite parts of game day,” said Lo Tempio. “Watching these kids stand tall and sing with confidence it’s very cool, and we’re all proud of them.”
From school plays to center ice, from quiet nerves to confident voices this is what growth looks like.
